For many children, running, jumping, balancing and throwing are simply part of growing up. These fundamental movement skills form the building blocks for physical activity, sport, independence and confidence. However, for children with limb loss or limb difference, opportunities to develop these skills are not always available in an inclusive and supportive environment.
That is why LimbPower's Fundamental Skills Workshops are so important.
The workshops are specifically designed for children with limb difference and amputation, creating a safe and welcoming space where they can develop movement skills at their own pace, make friends, try new activities and discover what they can achieve.
Rather than focusing on sporting performance, Fundamental Skills focuses on the foundations. Through a range of fun and engaging activities, children work on balance, coordination, agility, running, jumping, catching, throwing and movement confidence. These are the essential skills that help children participate more fully in school physical education, community sport and everyday life.
One of the most powerful aspects of the workshops is the opportunity for children to meet others with similar lived experiences. Many families tell us that their child has never met another young person with limb difference before attending a LimbPower event. Seeing others who use prostheses, adapt activities in different ways and embrace new challenges can have a transformative effect on confidence and self-belief.
The workshops are also an opportunity for parents and carers to connect with other families, share experiences and access practical advice and support. The result is not simply a day of activity, but a chance to build lasting friendships and strengthen the sense of belonging within the limb difference community.
At LimbPower, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to be active, to feel confident in their body and to discover what they are capable of achieving. The Fundamental Skills Workshops are often the first step on that journey. For some children, the experience leads to participation in community sport clubs, Paralympic Potential Days or the LimbPower Junior Games. For others, the greatest achievement is simply having the confidence to join in with activities at school or play more actively with friends.
Whatever the outcome, the workshops are helping children develop the skills, confidence and resilience needed to lead active and fulfilling lives.
We are delighted to be bringing our next Fundamental Skills Workshop to Bristol and look forward to welcoming both new and returning families. Whether your child is already active or just beginning their journey, we would encourage you to come along and experience the positive, inclusive and supportive environment that makes these workshops so special.
